Premier League predictions 2026-27: BBC Sport pundits pick their top four

BBC News

Arsenal ended a 22-year wait to be Premier League champions last season, but can they successfully defend their crown? That is the next target for Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, whose side finished seven points clear of nearest rivals Manchester City last time out. So, who will challenge them in 2026-27? We asked 26 BBC TV and radio pundits to pick their top four, with explanations for their selections. We've also asked AI's opinion, and included what Opta's'supercomputer' came up with too. The AI prediction was generated using Microsoft Copilot Chat - we simply asked the tool to predict the Premier League table for the 2026-27 season. Opta's'supercomputer' is actually a complex algorithm that uses a model based on betting market odds and the sports analytics company's own'power rankings', which are calculated using past results. It has simulated the outcome of all 380 Premier League games 10,000 times and came to the same conclusion as AI, and three of the pundits. Disagree with our expert humans or think you know more than any machine? You can make your own top-four prediction, and forecast the rest of the Premier League table, at the bottom of this page.

Google is trying to solve contrails with AI

Engadget

Google and the UK government are collaborating on a project to test whether airplanes can avoid creating contrails. The project, called Operation Blue Skies, will conduct the trial over Shanwick airspace, which sits above the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Contrails are the long white streaks in the sky left by jet engines. Most often created in cold, humid air, they form when water vapor condenses and freezes around aircraft exhaust. Researchers estimate that they contribute to about one-third of aviation's total climate impact.

'Banned over a pair of 2 sandals': Why some sellers are complaining about Vinted

BBC News

'Banned over a pair of £2 sandals': Why some sellers are complaining about Vinted Single mum Emma Neil was a huge fan of Vinted, using it most days to sell old things and buy clothes for her children. That was until she bought a pair of sandals for £3, found they didn't fit so relisted them for £2 then was permanently banned. Vinted said there had been fraudulent activity, such as selling counterfeit items. I did feel like a criminal, says Neil - one of several thousands complaining of being wrongly suspended or permanently banned, spending days trapped in a system of what they believe are AI generated responses. Vinted's preloved buying and selling community has grown rapidly with 17 million UK users - it says the overwhelming majority have a positive experience.

OpenAI makes ChatGPT less 'human' for teens in new safety update

BBC News

OpenAI makes ChatGPT less'human' for teens in new safety update The maker of ChatGPT is rolling out a range of new safety features today for under-18s who use the AI chatbot. Those with new teen accounts will be able to switch off the human voice response, in order to minimise the tech's ability to appear like a person. OpenAI is also introducing regular reminders for young people to take a break from using the tool, reminding them ChatGPT is AI, and saying it can wait. The firm insisted this was not in response to a particular issue with children believing ChatGPT to be alive - but there are growing concerns about people becoming convinced that the AI tools they interact with are sentient . Last year Mustafa Suleyman, the head of AI at rival firm Microsoft, said seemingly conscious AI products kept him awake at night because he was so worried about their impact on society .

AI to help planes avoid climate-warming 'sky graffiti'

BBC News

AI to help planes avoid climate-warming'sky graffiti' We've all looked up and seen the white lines trailing behind aircraft in the sky. Known as contrails, these icy clouds contribute to climate change, and scientists have been trying to work out how to stop them. Now, a £5m UK trial will test whether AI can help, by predicting where warming contrails are likely to form and getting planes to avoid those areas. The 30-month Operation Blue Skies project brings together Google, the UK government, the Met Office, air traffic control provider National Air Traffic Services (NATS) and academic researchers. It will focus on the Shanwick Oceanic airspace in the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor which accounts for approximately 5% of global contrail warming.

British PM Burnham duped by White House impostor

Al Jazeera

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reportedly exchanged messages with someone posing as a senior government official in the United States. The UK leader believed he was speaking to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles in a recent exchange of messages, the Politico news outlet reported on Monday. US authorities have warned in recent months about AI being used to impersonate senior government officials. The contents of the messages remain unclear. Burnham then reportedly became suspicious, cut off communications and informed the relevant authorities.
